Chapter Six

A Wanderer in the Desert of Lust

The dragon’s roar filled the clearing, sending a shudder through her. Then, as she watched, he transformed back into his human form. He stood naked before her, his dark gaze taking in their surroundings. He started toward her, and it took every fiber of her being to keep her eyes on his face.

“Meredith,” he said, “I want you.”

She stared into his beautiful face, and just before he—

“Nope.”

Meredith highlighted the entire text and pressed delete. With a groan of frustration, she pushed the laptop aside, fighting the urge to chuck it out the window. Two days had passed since Jake had kissed her and she still couldn’t get the thought of him out of her mind. She’d successfully avoided him, staying locked in her bedroom, except for meals. When they did see each other, she avoided small talk, keeping their discussions as brief as possible.

Next to her, Saint-Germain looked up at her with those round eyes.

“You know,” she told him, “I should probably write a story about you.”

The dog didn’t respond, which Meredith took as a no.

At least he didn’t have her problems. All the Chihuahua needed to worry about was his next meal. He didn’t have a stalker threatening his life or an old flame he couldn’t resist.

What happened the other night… could never happen again. But Meredith couldn’t shake the feeling that it was going to, not unless she left the ranch. But with this latest attack, that was looking more impossible than ever. So, if Jake tried to kiss her again, there was no telling how effective her resistance would be this time.

What’s worse, a part of her wished he would test her resistance again.

If Selena got wind of what was going on, she’d flip. Meredith hadn’t told her yet about the kiss. She hadn’t told anyone. Not even Patricia, although she suspected Keith and she already knew.

She heard the sound of hooves and when she looked out the window, she saw Jake riding a brown horse, racing from the barn, his hat nearly flying off his head. He turned his head toward her bedroom window, and for a second, their eyes met.

Meredith stepped back, her heart thundering in her chest. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. It’s just Jake. You can go back to working on your novel. No biggie.

Or she could go out there and talk to him.

Ignoring the annoying voice in her head, telling her to stop and think about the consequences of her actions, she hurried down the stairs and through the house, which was empty because Keith and Patricia had gone into town to do some shopping and wouldn’t be back until after lunch.

To her surprise, Jake was waiting when she stepped out onto the porch. He grinned at her, and she felt her insides twist into a knot.

“Hi,” she said.

“Howdy.” He slid off the horse and climbed the porch steps. “You okay?”
